Sunbury Radio began broadcasting in 1988 under the name 99.4 Bulla FM, providing a local voice for Sunbury and surrounding communities in Melbourne’s outer north west. In 1999, the station rebranded as 3NRG and moved to 99.3FM, reflecting its growing role within the region and a renewed commitment to community broadcasting.

On 22 June 2000, the Australian Broadcasting Authority released a licence area plan for the Sunbury region. The plan confirmed the need for a permanent community radio service. 3NRG was the only applicant and was granted a permanent licence, replacing the temporary licence under which it had previously operated. This milestone secured the station’s future as a recognised community broadcaster.

The station was established to deliver local news, information and community access to Sunbury and nearby areas including Diggers Rest, The Gap, Couangult and Toolern Vale. Over the years it has supported local music, broadcast major community events and hosted battle of the bands competitions. In June 2000, the station entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the world’s longest DJ marathon.

In 2015 and 2016, the station undertook a major rebuild, upgrading studios, shared spaces, broadcast systems and technology. These changes expanded outside broadcasting and introduced internet streaming. Today, broadcasting as Sunbury Radio, the station continues its long tradition of serving and reflecting the local community.

In 2026 the station revamped its website, adding On Demand listen back functionality.
